Algeria stays an important market for the construction industry
Update of March 13, 2020 – Interview
Three questions to Michael Monnerjahn, Senior Manager at Germany Trade & Invest, about why it is worth investing in the Algerian construction sector now.
1) Algeria is considered as a difficult market, not least because of the currently uncertain political situation. Why does it still make sense for companies from abroad to have activities there?
The political situation in Algeria has never been easy over the past decades. Nevertheless, Algeria has become the fourth biggest national economy in Africa. The standard of living, the proximity to Europe and the quite well-trained population ensure that Algeria will stay an important market in the future.
2) How is the Algerian construction sector developing?
In the short run, the whole Algerian economy suffers from the currently uncertain political situation. However, Algeria continues to be a growth market. Until 2050, the country’s population will increase by almost 50 percent from today’s 43 million inhabitants up to then 61 million inhabitants. The country has to and will continue to invest in house construction and infrastructure.
3) Is Algeria still significant for the German economy?
Currently, Algeria is in Africa the fourth most important market for German companies. And it will continue to be part of the African top markets in the future as well. If Algeria starts a reform policy and the political situation calms down again, its significance could even increase.
